Bassus was in charge of the remaining men. Most had returned with Lord Vetlok to the main camp. He didn't want to waste time getting worthless information from his two prisoners. All he wanted was his revenge. He wanted to kill that witch who had showed the Rangers his hideout. If he hadn't escaped from the prison in Deodar, he'd be hanging from some tree right now. Killing the Ranger was just a bonus. Bassus would kill a Ranger any chance he got.
When morning came, he was ready for his revenge. He drew a long bladed knife from the sheath, which hung on his belt and started toward the back room.
"Hey Bassus. Take 'em outside to kill 'em. I don't want to clean up the mess," one of the men whined.
"Then help me get them out, you lazy cur," Bassus retorted. "Come on, all of you."
Flindra and Leitho were dragged into the open area behind the shack. Leitho had struggled valiantly until he received another sharp whack to the head. He was barely conscious as he was brought out.
Bassus stood over the stunned Ranger. "So you wanted to protect the girl. Well, watch her die!"
He walked over to where Flindra was struggling with her guards. He took a firm hold on the collar of her jerkin. "Now you pay witch." He let the sun reflect off the long blade of his knife. More than anything he wanted to see Flindra scared. He searched her face for any sign of fear but saw none. "Beg, you piece of cow dung. Beg me for your life!" he shouted in fury.
Flindra only looked at him. She would never indulge him by showing fear. She concentrated on strengthening Rigga's shield and waited to test her powers against his knife.
