Chapter XVI, Reading 6

Flindra woke up as rough hands seized her and forced her to stand. The light coming through the hatch momentarily blinded her.
"Remember me witch?" demanded a voice.
Flindra tried to focus her eyes. Her left eye was swollen closed and her right eye was too sore to see clearly. She could barely make out a man's face. Slowly the image coalesced. It was a face she remembered, a face that belonged to the greasy haired renegade she had helped capture - the one Lieutenant Kalmyk called Bassus.
"Remember me?" Bassus demanded again. To refresh her memory he slapped her across her bruised face.
Flindra pretended to have been hit. Rigga's power shield had actually deflected the blow but she didn't want to give herself away. She stared at Bassus and said nothing.
"Answer me you cow!" Bassus hissed and struck her again.
"Take it easy with the prisoners, Bassus," yelled a voice from the deck. "Lord Vetlok will be upset if we give him two dead bodies. He specifically ordered that we bring back the prisoners alive so he can question them. Wait until he is through with his interrogation and you can take out your personal revenge on what ever's left."
Bassus swore and pushed Flindra down to the floor. As he walked away, he kicked her in the back. "I'm not finished with you, yet. I'll let Vetlok have his fun with you and then you're mine."
Flindra's concentration had wavered slightly when Bassus pushed her down. She had felt that kick to her kidneys.
"I must concentrate. I must concentrate or I'm dead," Flindra mumbled to herself. The power of the shield came from the power of her mind. She had to be strong.
Out of need and habit, she directed her thoughts to the Spirit. "Beloved One," she begged in her thoughts. "Stand by me, please. Help us and guide us."
