Leitho had been quiet ever since Flindra claimed her birthright. This talent of hers was certainly amazing, but there was an element which concerned him deeply. "Flindra, are your memories complete? Do they go all the way back to King Meldh and Queen Kwenth?"
"Yes, to both your questions."
"Then you feel the sorrow and pain they knew when the Nameless Ones destroyed them?"
"I'm aware of their suffering," Flindra answered in a quiet voice. "I know what you are thinking, Sergeant. Don't concern yourself about the pain the memories bring. I suffer no more by the knowledge I have than they did. Both King Meldh and Queen Kwenth knew the fate that awaited them. If they could bear it so can I."
Deep respect registered in his eyes. "Your birthright carries a great burden," he announced.
Flindra stared at the green canvas of the tent wall; her thoughts were miles and years away. "It does," she finally answered in a tired voice.
"You were warned by something out in the swamp," Kalmyk said to change the subject. His purpose was not to delve into her personal life. She could volunteer information if she chose to; he would not push her.
Flindra took her orb from beneath her tunic. It glowed with power.
Both men gasped in surprise. They had never seen anything as wonderful or as beautiful.
"This is my chief weapon against the Nameless Ones. I've used it many times to assist our cause. Today it warned me of danger as Sergeant Leitho and I worked our way into the swamp. I knew something was gravely wrong for my orb has only warned me like this once before." She slipped the sphere back into her tunic.
